"THE BRIAN NEW EFFECT....I completed my first Ironman in Bolton last year and I now love the sport of triathlon more than ever.
Met Brian towards end of 2012 through a friend and from joining David Lloyd and am an ever present die hard at his Monday and Wednesday night Tri classes. After getting to know him a little more I asked if he would mind sorting out a training plan which would enable me to get as close as possible to a 10 hr Ironman. (I completed Bolton in 12 hrs 59 and dare I say it found it comfortable for want of a better word). He was more than happy to help and worked on putting together a 20 week programme for me to follow which started at the beginning of March 2013 and finished with the race itself. However I was still in 2012 and have since soaked up as much info as possible to help me train over the winter and put myself in a great position to start the plan. Apart from the odd session I have pretty much followed his advice to the letter and as I can be a little over enthusiastic at times also added more on, well that was if i wasn't dead on my feet.
So after the best winter of training I've ever done we start 2013 and I have 23 races planned throughout the year and a few goals that id like to achieve, not necessarily this year but within the next 2-3. Qualify for Ironman world championships in Hawaii and the 70.3 world championships. Represent Team GB at my age group and win my age group at an Ironman event oh and do a sub 10 hr Ironman which would have to happen in order to reach my goals. I like a challenge and after the year I've had so far I feel I'm more than capable (positive thinking).
So on to 2013. Completed in 9 races so far in 6 I have set PB's and not by a few seconds I've knocked off anywhere between 2 minutes in 10K races 5 minutes in a duathlon and half marathon all the way up to 14 minutes in my second ever marathon.
The training has definitely helped as I've never improved this much in such a short space and long may it continue for the rest of the year.
Were just getting to triathlon season now so this is where it gets interesting. My first 70.3 Ironman in Wimbleball took place just over a week ago and was amazing and with Brian's help I managed to finish 98th out of 1700 and 21st in my age group in a time of 5 hrs 37 minutes. (Let me just state this is not an easy or flat course).
So in a nutshell the training plan is great and will push you if you put the work in, all the advice if you take it in is spot on and Brian is more than happy to help you if your prepared to listen and put in the effort. It clearly works, I've being doing Triathlons for 5 years now and only really took it seriously last year as before then it was just pure fun, now its still pure fun but I've developed a competitive side which to be honest i didn't really have before. Is there anything i don't like, well err rest days because I'm addicted and for some reason think ill lose something if i don't train. I'm learning to have them mainly because the training plan gets you to a point where you need it. That's a good thing. Seriously there's nothing I don't like about it i have off days but that's it. But I've seen such an improvement that it keeps me going as i want to see how good i can get.
All I can finally say is a big thanks for all your help, it means a lot and i appreciate everything you have done for me and are doing for me. To anyone reading this who is thinking of using a coach to help them in whatever way then look no further. As with anything you get out what you put in, but the advice and knowledge is top class and works. Enjoy and maybe ill see you on one of his training sessions one day ".

"I have known Brian for a number of years so was aware of his amazing endurance achievements . Through the classes and talking to him after over a beer, I realised how much knowledge he had aquired, so when I decided to have a go at a 70.3 ironman triathlon I asked him to coach me . The programme was intensive, but varied and flexible which made it easier to follow and we talked a lot during this time .
Brian is very flexible and easy to contact and conveys passion for his athletes with no sense of elitism and lots of humility.
He was always happy to engage and provided lots of titbits also about different equipment and nutrition . His passion is contagious and his enthusiasm has brought more people of all abilities and ages to the sport. He leads by example, not only with his own training and events but also by his endurance charity work . The coaching helped me to successfully complete the triathlon but much more importantly for me personally is the confidence and well being I have gained and the opportunity to enjoy a sport with a lot of lovely new people".

"I joined Brian's Monday night class as I had the idea of an Iron distance triathlon in mind. I had done a half-ironman and a few olympic triathlons and knew there was a lot I needed to learn, I was way down any pecking order in terms of physical ability. I soon realised I had previously had no idea on cycling - hills, cadence, gears, maintaining watts, knowing when and how to push.
Brian gave great advice on gym training, methods, distances, brick exercises and being able to enjoy long cycles during the year's training.
My whole strength markedly improved, legs, core, running and swimming ability. I completed my ironman three weeks ago and am still in the glow of completing such an epic physical and mental event. Brian's example, practical advice and conversations during a long run, or over a post-exercise drink, had a huge effect on my confidence, mental state and completing a dream".

"I had recently competed in a sprint triathlon and was instantly addicted to the sport. After completing the sprint I immediately entered an Olympic distance event and decided the tri club at DL would be a great start; this is where I met Brian New…..that’s where it all began!!!
Brian’s positive ‘can do’ attitude is so addictive!
After spending 3 years attending Brian’s classes and undertaking several triathlons of which Brian always took a great deal of interest in. Despite not formally coaching me Brian gave me training plans nutrition advice and spent time discussing race strategy especially for my first Half Ironman in 2014 to make sure I was ready. I then decided to enter Ironman UK 2015 and Brian kindly said he would train me.
We started training 6 months out with weekly training plans and continuous feedback on how things were going, one thing I found in Brian’s approach was the importance he places on one of the most important parts – your family and he would also tailor training plans around bad training weekends (weddings; Funerals, bar mitzvah etc.).
My Ironman journey was not without problems I injured my knee and was unable to run for 9-10 weeks. At this point I was filled with self-doubt and it was a real low point for me. Brian kept me motivated tailored my training around my injury provided rehab advice, strengthening exercises and an unwavering positive attitude (enough for both of us) that I would overcome this. To quote Brian:
Well you have two options....and you’re NOT, not going to do this....so that leaves just one. Let’s get on with it”.
As race day approached Brian discussed and recommended kit selection, race day nutrition, strategy and transitions everything I could possible think off had been covered. Brian’s attention to detail was unbelievable topped off with a motivational email detailing a step by step build up from the Friday night through to the actual race day. With the final message ringing home to me - You have done the hard work ENJOY IT! I stood on the start line fully prepared in the best physical and mental shape of my life ready for the challenge ahead.
I cannot recommend Brian enough he has probably forgotten more about triathlon that most people know.
Brian's advice, commitment and positivity when he trains you is unbelievable; you ultimately don’t have a choice but to start believing in yourself. He has made a huge impact on me with respect to my own confidence and self believe; not to mention my physical condition".

"Inspirational guy. People read his blogs. Pro sports people pay thousands for a sports psychologist. Your times are not getting better, it's hard to get out and train, I'm feeling a little strain. It takes someone like BRIAN NEW to create that little fire in your belly". MARK STANTON - Ironman finisher ________________________________ "I contacted Brian at the suggestion of a friend who had previously been successfully coached for Half Ironman. Brian's CV is extremely impressive, and as a result he understands the physical and mental pressures of endurance events and the requirements to succeed. I managed to knock over an hour off my Ironman time and Brian gave me everything I was looking for in a coach & more - Commitment, Understanding, Development, and most importantly of all I did it with a smile on my face". ROB HALL - Ironman Lanzarote Ironman Finisher x 3 ________________________________ |
"I sit at times when I'm down and having an off day, but then read your posts about what training you do, what operation you've had, what race your doing and that's all the inspiration I need to get back out there, and that is me being very honest. I think your wasting your talent & knowledge if you're not passing it on. Get yourself out there and coach, do it for yourself, you have so much to pass on and you never know what you could do if you work with somebody who has the same drive and determination as you have".
